While motorways are four times as safe as conventional roads, APRR has a duty to do all in its power to further improve that figure and make its network a place of safety both for users and for employees working on the ground.

Reducing the risk of accidents requires a multifaceted approach.

  • The concessionaire must ensure that the infrastructure is of appropriate quality and properly maintained, and that signalling is effective, while drivers must respect each other and comply with the rules of the road.
  • While some variables – such as severe weather conditions – cannot be controlled, measures can be taken to limit their impact.

With a view to optimising safety, the APRR Group implements the full range of active and passive measures, including monitoring and alert systems, crisis-management tools and mechanisms to encourage civic-minded behaviour. These serve to complement public campaigns on themes such as loss of vigilance, tyre-inflation pressures, tailgating, seatbelts, etc.

Results improving constantly

Safety is improving continually, with annual drops of 6% in the numbers of fatal accidents, deaths and accidents involving injuries over the past 20 years.

A comprehensive approach to accidentology

The Group stores details of all accidents in a central database (some 5,000 records annually for APRR and 1,300 for AREA). This database identifies the characteristics and factors relating to each accident from a set of 220 criteria. Fatal accidents are always analysed by the Group in collaboration with law-enforcement officials.
