Developing car-sharing

Car-sharing

In September 2020, at the entrance to Grenoble, the APRR and AREA motorways opened the first lane reserved for car-sharing on a motorway in France. The aim: reduce the number of vehicles on this very busy stretch of the A48, which accommodates 100,000 vehicles per day in both directions.

The initiative is in force only during rush hour. It is marked by a sign with a white diamond on a black background, newly registered with the French Highway Code. When this sign is illuminated, the left lane becomes exclusive reserved for vehicles carrying 2 or more people, as well as for taxis and 100% electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles. The speed limit is also reduced to 50 km/h for all lanes. To ensure that the instruction is respected by all motorists, latest-generation sensors have been installed on the central reservation. Using photographic analysis software armed with artificial intelligence, they can count the occupants in the front and rear of the vehicle.
