Innovating for the safety of all

Our motorways are five times safer than secondary roads. We are constantly investing in the safety of motorists and more than a third of our employees are looking after their safety 24/7. Awareness, mobilisation and innovation are at the heart of the work we do to improve safety across our network.

Mobilised teams and efficient systems

Mobilised teams

One third of our workforce is dedicated to safety. At the heart of our system are three command posts that provide a real-time view of the network through 550 surveillance cameras. This static system is supplemented by frequent and regular patrols of surveillance vehicles. This ensures our teams are able to react quickly in the event of an incident, to ensure your safety.

Induction loops placed at regular intervals (approximately every 20 km) calculate traffic, speed and other useful information to assess journey times. Weather stations measure weather conditions and help us take preventive measures in case of bad weather and inform travellers in advance via dynamic message signs and Autoroute Info radio.

Cameras monitor interchanges and sensitive areas, while automatic incident detectors report slowdowns or accidents in real time.

Improving accident prevention

The Traffic Safety teams strive to carry out in-depth analyses of each accident that occurs across our network: detailed analysis for each fatal accident and more general and statistical analysis of all events in order to identify the sectors with the highest accident rates. APRR works in conjunction with its motorway colleagues and shares its ideas and tools with the French Professional Association for Concession Motorways and Infrastructure (ASFA).

In addition to these innovations and tools, awareness campaigns are conducted throughout the year to inform you about road safety issues. Activities are regularly organised at rest areas. Billboards, Autoroute INFO 107.7 messages and institutional partnerships are also used to encourage travellers to take regular breaks and adopt safe behaviours.

Finally, road safety meetings and training sessions are organised in collaboration with schools, local authorities and companies. Special centres, managed in partnership with an insurer, recreate high-risk situations to raise awareness of road hazards.

Autoroute Info

The radio station Autoroute Info 107.7 has almost 30 journalists and 6 studios working to inform passengers in real time about traffic disruptions and in-progress roadworks. More than half of motorists (51% according to the Ifop January 2023 survey) regularly listen to Autoroute Info during their journeys.
