APRR commissioned France’s first open road toll motorway in November 2022: the A79, commonly known as the Bourbonnaise. This motorway features open road tolls, i.e. a barrier-free toll that works by automatically reading the electronic toll badge and/or registration plate when vehicles pass under a gantry in the middle of the lane. The open road system captures and processes the characteristics necessary to calculate the toll amount. In addition to avoiding traffic slowdowns, open road tolls have a double environmental. By eliminating the need to shut down and restart engines at toll gates, the free flow of traffic helps reduce CO2 emissions. Furthermore, the footprint of the infrastructure, and therefore soil impermeability, is greatly reduced by the elimination of extensions either side of toll barriers. The open road technology can also be used to enable "ticket-free entry". In this case, the inward barriers are removed and the outward barriers are maintained. By deploying open road technology in all its forms, APRR is asserting itself as a leader in the motorway of tomorrow.
